Ingredients

DOUGH:

  • 2 tbsp warm water
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup plain whole milk yogurt
  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

GARLIC BUTTER:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1/4 tsp salt more to taste
  • 1 –2 tbsp chopped cilantro

CHEESE FILLING:

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

COOKING:

  • Vegetable oil or ghee for cooking the naan

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until bubbly.
  • In a large bowl or mixer, mix flour, yogurt, warm water, olive oil, salt, and proofed yeast. Knead until a dough forms.
  • Place in an oiled bowl, cover with wrap and towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  • While rising, mix garlic butter ingredients in a bowl. Set aside.
  • Divide dough into 7–8 balls. Flatten slightly, fill center with mozzarella and parmesan, then pinch shut and roll flat.
  • Heat skillet over medium. Cook each naan 2–3 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  • Brush warm naan with garlic butter on one or both sides.
  • Serve immediately or reheat on a skillet for 1 minute per side.

Notes

Cheesy garlic naan bread is best served warm, right off the skillet. For a twist, try adding red pepper flakes to the garlic butter for a spicy kick.
