Ingredients

Main

  • 40 pieces saltine crackers to cover a 10×15-inch baking sheet
  • 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Toppings

  • 0.5 cup crushed peppermint candy optional
  • 0.5 cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a rimmed 10×15-inch baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with cooking spray.
  • Arrange crackers in a single layer on prepared baking sheet.
  • Place butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan and melt over medium heat, stirring until smooth. Bring to a gentle boil and boil for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Immediately pour the butter-sugar mixture over crackers and spread with an offset spatula to cover all crackers.
  • Bake for 5 minutes, until the mixture is bubbling.
  • Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 2 minutes to soften, then spread chocolate evenly over toffee.
  • Sprinkle with optional toppings.
  • Chill until set, about 30 minutes. Break into pieces and serve.

Notes

Allow the toffee to bubble a full 3 minutes for best snap.
Chill completely before breaking for clean edges.
Store in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
