Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs sirloin steak thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 6 tbsp vegetable oil divided
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 1 –2 red chillies sliced
  • 2 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 4 cloves garlic diced
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 5 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • Sesame seeds for garnish
  • Spring onions sliced, for garnish

Instructions

  • Place sliced sirloin in a bowl. Season with onion powder, salt, and pepper. Add egg, mix, then coat with cornstarch.
  • Heat 4 tbsp vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Fry beef strips in batches, about 4 minutes per side, until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  • In the same pan, add 2 tbsp oil and sliced onion. Cook 3 minutes until soft.
  • Stir in chillies, ginger, and garlic. Cook 2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add rice vinegar, soy sauce, tomato paste, sweet chilli sauce, and sugar. Whisk until smooth and bring to a light boil.
  • Return beef to the pan and toss in sauce until coated.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onions. Serve hot with rice or noodles.

Notes

For extra crispiness, fry beef strips in small batches. Variation: swap beef for chicken to make Crispy Chilli Chicken with the same sticky sauce.
