- 1 1/2 lbs sirloin steak thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 6 tbsp vegetable oil divided
- 1 onion sliced
- 1 –2 red chillies sliced
- 2 tsp fresh ginger grated
- 4 cloves garlic diced
- 3 tbsp rice vinegar
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp tomato paste
- 5 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
- 2 tbsp sugar
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Spring onions sliced, for garnish
Place sliced sirloin in a bowl. Season with onion powder, salt, and pepper. Add egg, mix, then coat with cornstarch.
Heat 4 tbsp vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Fry beef strips in batches, about 4 minutes per side, until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
In the same pan, add 2 tbsp oil and sliced onion. Cook 3 minutes until soft.
Stir in chillies, ginger, and garlic. Cook 2 minutes until fragrant.
Add rice vinegar, soy sauce, tomato paste, sweet chilli sauce, and sugar. Whisk until smooth and bring to a light boil.
Return beef to the pan and toss in sauce until coated.
Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onions. Serve hot with rice or noodles.
For extra crispiness, fry beef strips in small batches. Variation: swap beef for chicken to make Crispy Chilli Chicken with the same sticky sauce.
