- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ tsp sugar
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes optional
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- ¼ cup water if needed, to thin the sauce
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
Stir in garlic and tomato paste. Cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, and red pepper flakes.
Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add water if sauce is too thick.
